Shirley Sentell

1938-2015

Shirley Sentell Shirley Sentell

Shirley Rose Sentell, 76, of Salisbury passed away peacefully with her family at her side, following a brief illness, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the Moncton Hospital.

Born in Kensington, PEI she was the daughter of the late Fulton and Gertrude (Cameron) Paynter.  Always very athletic and competitive, she was a feisty guard in basketball during high school, and in the process, caught the attention of the Referee "Doug" and the rest is history. Doug then introduced her to badminton, which she quickly mastered. In Ladies Doubles she won the NB Championship, the Maritime Championship and went on to play in the Canadian Open and then shared her love of this sport by coaching for many years.

Along the way she discovered golf, which became her true passion. She was the most successful female golfer to ever come out of the Petitcodiac Golf Club, holding the title of Club Champion for numerous years. She was also selected as a member of the NB Senior Ladies Golf team several years. Whether playing in a tournament or a friendly round with the girls, Shirley's favourite place to be was on "the course".

She is survived and sadly missed by her husband of 55 years Doug; children Cathy Darland (Paul Vokey) of Moncton, Peter (Rose) of Edmonton and Christie Sentell (Seldon MacLeod) of The Glades; she was known lovingly as "Golfin' Nanny" by her cherished grandchildren Leslie and Alison, Douglas, James and Samantha and Caden and Connor and great grandchildren Parker and Maxwell.

Resting at Salisbury Funeral Home, 3350 Salisbury Road (372-4800) visiting will be Monday, March 16 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm and from where the funeral will be held in the chapel Tuesday, March 17 at 11 am with Rev. Canon Wally Corey officiating.  Interment at Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date.

If desired, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Pine Hill Cemetery or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
