Emily Steeves

1927-2023

Emily Steeves

It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Emily (Bateman) Steeves, 95, of Petitcodiac on January 28th, 2023 at the Moncton Hospital. Born in Shediac, she was a daughter to the late Amos & Ella (Wood) Bateman.

Emily was a Pleasant Vale W.I. lifelong member. She was honored to be a contributing non-member to the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Petitcodiac. She spent many years working part and then full time at Eatons until the catalogue department closed in 1976. She left her home on Shediac Rd when she married Dad in 1946 and moved to Pleasant Vale. No running water or electricity. She was welcome into Dad’s family with love. Times were tough, but she learned to cook, sew, knit and loved my sister and I unconditionally. She and Dad sold the farm and moved to Petitcodiac in 1970, but continued to tap trees and make maple sugar for several years. She was a master craftsman when it came to boiling sap and making syrup. When my sister became disabled as a result of the car accident that also took her grandson’s life, my mother devoted herself to do anything that would bring comfort and care. My father’s death in 2016 took its toll but she soldiered on. Emily was the wonderful "Queen" of our family and the last surviving member from her generation of Pleasant Vale.

Emily is survived and sadly missed by her daughter, Phyllis Plume; her grandchildren: Margie, Bruce (Lorraine), Patsy, Rodney (Marlene) and Tom (Tammy); her great grandchildren: Vanessa, Kristin, Emma, Tyler, Ashley and Jordan; her great-great grandchildren: Braeden, Bailey, Brantley, Karlee, Rylan and Hadley; her brother, Ronnie (Winnie); her sister, Joy (late Arnold); son in law, Arnold as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Emily was predeceased by her husband, Clinton (Ken) Steeves; her daughter, Shirley Douthwright; her grandson, Darcy Douthwright; her sisters: Gladys, Joan, June and Hazel; her brothers: Gordon, Elwood and Arthur.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home for the care given over the last ten months and the palliative care doctors and nurses.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Salisbury Funeral Home (372-4800). A graveside interment at the Pleasant Vale Cemetery will be announced at a later date in the Spring.

If desired, donations to the IWK and the St, Andrews Anglican Church would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences and donations may be made at www.keirsteads.ca
