Dorothy  Harpell

Dorothy Roberta Harpell, 88, passed away November 23, 2017 at her residence at Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home, Moncton, NB. Born on December 15, 1928 in Sackville, NB to the late Isabelle (Griffin) and Piermont Harpell.

  Survived by her nieces and nephews, Bernadette "Bernie" (Bonnar) Ryan (Dennis Moulaison); Mitchell Bonnar (Lynda) all of Yarmouth, NS, Chris Colwell of Minto, NB,  April (born Harpell) (Michel) Caissie of Colpitt’s Settlement, NB; Cindy Harpell, of Moncton, NB; several grand, and great-grand nieces and nephews.

  Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her sister, Carol (Harpell) Bonnar; brother, Michael Harpell; and niece, Linda MacFarlane.

  Dorothy had a long and illustrious career in the entertainment industry. She left New Brunswick in 1955 to begin her career as a model and opera singer in Edmonton AB. Dorothy obtained the title of Miss Alberta, and was runner-up with the Talent award in the 1956 Miss Canada pageant. She moved on to a contract with CBC Radio in Toronto, ON in 1960, and television in Vancouver, BC. She later took to the musical theatre, based in Los Angeles, CA. Dorothy began her American singing career debuting as a guest on the Art Linkletter Show.  She subsequently toured the western U.S. supper clubs and hotels, as part of a band (The Keynotes), and then as an independent piano and songstress entertainer.  Dorothy retired at age 62. She came home to New Brunswick to fully retire in her late seventies.

  There will be no funeral service or visitation by request of the family. Interment will take place at Pinehill Cemetery, Salisbury, NB, at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Salisbury Funeral Home, 3350 Route 106, Salisbury, NB (372-4800).
