Douglas S. Howatt

  Douglas Stevens Howatt, 79, of Petitcodiac, passed away peacefully at his home, Saturday, June 18, 2016 after a brief illness.

  Born in Carleton, PEI he was a son of the late A. Rankin and Annie Z. (Easter) Howatt.  Doug followed in the footsteps of his father joining the family grocery business and in later years working with his sons.  He set several high school basketball records which stood for many years.  As a talented hockey player, Doug played with teams such as the Sussex Rangers, Amherst Ramblers, and Bathurst Papermakers before being picked up by the Boston Bruins organization.  He played for North Bay, ON and Washington, DC before returning to Petitcodiac to raise a family.  He then played for, and subsequently coached, the Moncton Hawks.  He was an original member/investor in the Petitcodiac Valley Golf & Country Club, an award-winning amateur golfer, and became a respected golf instructor.  He worked tirelessly as Mayor of the Village of Petitcodiac (1971-1974) and under his leadership the village attained tennis courts, the swimming pool, an ambulance, a doctor, and the funding and approval to build the arena.  He also provided leadership in keeping the High School in Petitcodiac. 

  Doug is survived by his children Douglas (Angela), Rick (Judy Keith), Randy (Terri) all of Petitcodiac and Susan Wood (Jeff) of Bright's Grove, ON; his wife, from whom he was separated, Sylvia (Greening); grandchildren Charles, Christine, Jennifer MacKillop, Tavden, Logan, Angel, Ryan, Melodie, Blaze, Slade and Nicholas; seven great grandchildren; brothers Charles (Pauline) of Petitcodiac and Frank (Timmy) of Amherst, NS; sisters Sally Conroy (Ed) of Ottawa, ON and Jean Farwell (late Ronald) of Rothesay; sister-in-law Eileen Howatt of Newmarket, ON and several nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by brothers Keir and Lorne. 

  There will be a private family funeral at Salisbury Funeral Home, 3350 Salisbury Road (372-4800).  Interment at Maplewood Cemetery.
